LAKE FOREST – It’s called the Daniel Plan, after a passage in the Bible, and on the plan, Saddleback Church’s Rick Warren has lost 36 pounds and participants have lost a combined 200,000 pounds, church officials say.
Warren kicked off the fitness plan in January – based on Daniel 1, in which the prophet Daniel opts for vegetables and water rather than “defile himself with the royal food and wine” – with a pledge to lose 90 pounds by the end of the year.
Warren pulled together health experts, Dr. Mark Hyman, an expert in metabolism, cardiac surgeon and TV host Dr. Mehmet Oz, and local author and UCI professor Dr. Daniel Amen, to promote the effort, part of Saddleback’s Decade of Destiny – a 10-year plan to expand the ministry. The plan includes an element of personal growth meant to equip parishioners to succeed in seven areas: spiritual, physical, financial, relational, vocational, emotional and mental.
